In her free time? Loves to listen to all kinds of music, read on the bus and go to pubs with friends here in Dublin.
Having just moved here from Brazil, Luana signed up to volunteer with Helium Arts to meet some friends while doing something she loved. Little did she know that volunteering would connect her to the Dublin community in ways she couldn’t have imagined.
When Luana moved to Ireland a few years ago, she read that volunteering opportunities were very strong here. When she found that Helium was looking for a graphic design volunteer, she didn’t think twice and applied.
That was back in 2015, and since then, Luana has done loads of great projects for Helium. She has designed the Christmas cards, strategy documents, banners and fliers, as well as most recently, the Teddy Care Plan (pictured right) for Helium Arts’ Teddy Bear Check Up at LloydsPharmacy Ireland in association with UCD Paediatric Society.
But volunteering has not only given Luana an opportunity to do work that she loves, but also it has shaped her life here.
“Thanks to Helium I met some great people, my networking has increased, it helped me to get a job in Ireland and I feel good about helping so many people while doing what I love,” Luana said.
Her work supports Helium Arts in a big way
And her work is vital to Helium Arts. As the national children’s art and health organization, Helium brings art, creativity and play to children and teenagers in hospital and community settings throughout Ireland.
Luana’s work helps us to connect and engage a wider audience, raise more funds and in turn bring the joy of creativity to many more children living with illness around Ireland.
Luana also works full time and takes English classes
Luana is not only a fabulous graphic design volunteer for Helium – she is also involved with two different schools that teach English. In one she works part-time for a marketing team and in the other she is enrolled in English classes!
We know, we know. When does she have time for volunteering?
Luana loves that she can do the work from home because it saves her time not having to go to an office. This flexible schedule parallels the creative work she does for Helium.
“I like the fact that every work that I do has lots of freedom to create,” Luana said. “They might send me the directions of what they are looking for but there is still freedom to create. When you are a designer this does not happen very often.”
Well deserved time off
When she’s got some free time, Luana likes the pubs in Dublin and finds herself going to them way more than in Brazil. And we can say with certainty that she deserves every minute of her free time. Thank you Luana.
