Artist in Residence
Puppet Portal Project
Helium’s current Artists in Residence project is the Puppet Portal Project an innovative arts and technology programme that links four children’s hospital communities together in the making of exciting new work. Four artists are resident in four hospitals where they works with children to design and create unique puppets and to devise performances which are then performed for children in the other three settings through the Puppet Portal, a web camera system.
The project aims to help counter the isolation that children can feel when they are hospitalized by connecting them to a wider community in a shared creative conversation. It aims to facilitate children in accessing their own creativity and using this resource to help them better cope with being in hospital. The project offers artists the chance to share ideas and to work as part of a team as well as developing their own practice in a fascinating and challenging setting.
PPP is a partnership project with the Centre for Health Informatics, Trinity College and the technology used is constantly evolving to suit the specific needs of participants.
